I want to make this one quick—I’m back on Substack with my personal content; here’s why:
In 2022, I started a Substack account under my name and, after six months, rebranded it to The Hungry. I then moved the list to Kit.com and have been operating The Hungry there ever since.
I stopped publishing on Substack in December of 2023 because of some bad decisions made by the company's leadership.
I also started researching and testing a few different email service providers, including Beehiiv, Ghost, and Medium’s new email functionality (I do not recommend that last one), with my personal or derivative content that didn’t fit into The Hungry.
Meanwhile, Substack realized they may have stepped on their toes and did a bit of backpedaling. They fixed some of the problems and banned a few extremist accounts but remained true to their vision of being a free speech platform.
At the same time, other platforms have allowed all sorts of radical voices to take up residence. It seems impossible to escape the bad actors entirely, but it made me realize that the best way to silence the ugliness is to become a louder voice for good.
In my experimentations with other ESPs, one thing remains true: no other platform has a better network effect than Substack. Their recommendation engine is greater than any other, and if I can use that to my advantage to share good stories that inform and entertain others, then I will use this space to become the louder voice.
This isn’t what you signed up for
When you subscribed to this account, this was something different, and if you decide this isn’t for you, I understand. I would love to have you as a reader, but if you want to part ways, we can do so as friends.
However, if you stick around, you can expect regular posts where I share stories, experiences, and insights on what I’m doing. I will talk about The Hungry occasionally but think of this as more of a behind-the-curtain look.
Also, when I make new art, I’ll be sharing that here because it’s all connected. If I’ve made you curious, here’s a taste of what I plan on sharing here going forward:
If you’re into that, cool. If not, also cool, but if you know someone who might enjoy it, I’d love a recommendation.
Thanks much,
Dave Conrey
